Visiting Vitry-sur-Seine with Jean-Philippe, our greeter, was a really great experience. Jean-Philippe shared his passion for the city and its street-art with us. We discovered a dynamic city with amazing pieces of art everywhere. Creating relationships between visitors and the locals is also a thing that Jean-Philippe does very well. We have excellent memories of this day, and we invite you to sign up for a visit of Vitry-Sur-Seine with a greeter.
J.P: I have decided to become a greeter because I’m passionate about my city. I love Vitry-Sur-Seine very much, I love its energy, and it’s a dynamic city full of vitality. There are quite few artists from the music scene who are from here. The whole rap movement was born in Vitry-Sur-Seine. It’s a pride for me to present it. This is the reason why I become a greeter. (The greeters are volunteers).
Y & S: Is there tourism in Vitry-Sur-Seine?
J.P: Some people do not take Tourism in Vitry-sur-Seine seriously but it’s a reality that is settling. I’am contributing to it’s development through an association called “Vitry’n Urbaine”. This association promotes through urban walks Street Art in Vitry-sur-Seine. Street art in Vitry is not only painted walls, it’s also about highlighting artistic processes by defending and promoting them to the public coming in Vitry.
Y & S:Is there a connection between tourism and street art?
J.P: Of course, there is! Tourism and Street art have become a trend through urban walks more and more popular. We give access to residents, to visitors, tourists whether they’re French or not. We allow people who are curious to come closer to the suburbs and discover them. When people think about France or Paris, they think within Paris itself. We want to show life, this emergence, which exists in Vitry-sur-Seine at least.
Y & S: Where do the tourists come from?
J.P: I have tourists from Vitry-Sur-Seine, from Val-De-Marne, a lot of Parisians are also coming and recently foreigners from everywhere, Italians, Russians, Belgians. They come to discover a city, they are interested mostly in Street Art and they always leave enchanted.
Graffiti sometimes leaves the streets to grow on the walls of old factories, art studios and even canevas. A good alternative for street art lovers on rainy days ! La Jarry in Vincennes is an incredible space for one of these days :
With 45 000 m2, six floors and a terrace, it is considered to be the biggest squat in Ile de France. You can wander around and discover over 5000 pieces of art, made by internationally famous artists like Monkey, Mimi The Clown, the RDLS collective or emerging new talents.
250 people are living and/or working in this space. The art studios are open to public only once a year, but you can interact with the residents-artists while crossing their paths in the labyrinth of the corridors. Some will invite you in, some others will ask for a quiet environment, each visit is an adventure !
You might encounter movie directors and their team, rolling some images in this unusual space; dancers enjoying the environment, Art is everywhere ! And the fact that it is considered as a “clean” squat, tolerated and even supported by the city makes it a safe space.
Get lost in the twists and turns of the Jarry, stumble upon incredible works of art, interact with the artists ! We guarantee you a staggering experience.
At the 106 rue de la Jarry, near by the metro station Chateau de Vincennes, leave the gates of Paris and enter Val-de-Marne in an unusual journey !
Come out of confinement and stuffy environment of museums, enjoy the outdoor art. Welcome to Vitry sur Seine the world capital of street art ! Breathe, touch, and experience real Art without seeming to!
Here, more than anywhere else you canlive street art in all its dimensions. The city has succeeded in bringing together talents comprising various techniques of painting like “stencil” , “mosaic ” , “graffiti”, and wherever they come from : Italia, Canada , GB, Ireland… Let us name among them : Pixel Pancho, Finbarr, Indigo, Stew, Alice Pasquini, Sonda, Avataar, Kashink ….
Don’t forget the talented and well recognised Christian Guémy alias C215 who is the pioneer of Street Art in Vitry-sur-Seine. He has contributed to its development when he installed there his first art worskhop in 2009. His colorful and fragile portraits are recognizable at first glance in many of streets of Vitry sur Seine. Some of them were even exported to the heart of cities around the world like as Los Angeles , Moscow and Rome.
Whether in summer or winter you can enjoy the city’s artistic landscape .The show is guaranteed regardless of the part of the city you are going through. The exciting thingabout this open air museum is that, from week to week , month to month, you may not see the same wall painting. The ephemeral nature of these works of art gives you the privilege to experience a unique private exhibition.
